HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH A BLIND MAN
WHEN I WAS AT THE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY to minister God’s Word to my men I had an earlier and most interesting meeting… As I came out of the ladies’ room one of the other volunteers was very close in proximity to me. With the aid of yet another volunteer, this particular volunteer was being guided. He was blind.
As I soon as I saw him, I realized I had to make a quick decision. My eyes were focused on him, not the woman assisting him. His cane was in his left hand, the lady assisting him, nearby. I had no room to go past: I was directly in his path and I wanted, of course, to be respectful. Realizing I needed to warn him of my direct presence I told him: “Okay, I am on your right.” It was great! He came to a complete stop, turning directly towards me with a big smile, asking my name. I hadn’t expected that! I love all people (as we are commanded to) and I am very impressed with people who choose joy, regardless of their challenges! As I told him my name, he reached out to shake my hand! I got the very definite impression he was pleased I boldly told him I was in his path and I was comfortable enough to let him know. This precious man shook my hand! What a privilege! What a blessing! I wasn’t embarrassed to warn him – I saw him as equal – precious, joyful and bold!
I grew up with sickness and disease and although I hate everything about the torturous effects they have on the individual afflicted, I know full well the effects they also can have on the entire family. Beloved: I want no part of sickness, disease or any other curse Christ has released us from. I don’t any part of any curse. No wise man does. It is imperative to believe and put into practice – this man is just as valuable as any – and as extremely precious! I believe he felt my respect. Blind, he was – downtrodden – he was not! He was a volunteer! Three cheers for strong, joyful people! He, like every God-created person, (that includes all of us!) has gifts to share. A blind man is valuable – just as valuable!
I beseech you to see the value of all people; whether they are blind, in a wheelchair, have Down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, or any other curse that is on their body or in their mind. I keep proclaiming that a person cannot be a Christian if they are prejudice!
No my friends, as well as the Christian knows the depth of his need to be forgiven; he also knows the extreme value God places on him! We cost the blood of Jesus! And: as well as knowing his need for forgiveness and his extreme value – the Christian has humbled himself, knowing each and every person is worthy of the blood of Jesus. God created all of mankind for His glory and pleasure, not wanting any to perish from Him! This wonderful knowledge also reveals the absolute worth of each and every person created by God for the purpose of love and — to receive love back! This is the Truth of God.
As I said, knowing what it’s like to be around people who suffer in diverse ways – I also have come to know that you only do for them what they cannot do for themselves. This shows them respect, which we all deeply need and deserve. No one if better than anyone else. Take it from the LORD God Almighty when He told Peter He loves Gentiles:
Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. Acts 10:34-35
SO: how do you communicate with a blind man? Or someone with fetal alcohol syndrome? Someone, perhaps, from a different country – speaking with a different dialect? Someone older or younger? Someone richer or poorer? OR: the sinner?! You treat them the very same as everyone else — with love, with kindness, and with great respect for they, like you have sinned fallen short of the glory of God – and God loves them. He loves his finest creation – people – before they were saints, while they were sinners. He loves those who receive healing, those who don’t. He loves the feeble. He loves the strong.
God loves. God is love. Go and do likewise!
HOLY SCRIPTURES FROM THIS “JOY STORY”
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
Romans 12:9-18
God is love.
1 John 4:8
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. ’All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Matthew 22:36-40
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:9
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:6-8

Growing up in a home without the love for God, an invalid father, heavy financial hardships, and tremendous (sometimes dangerous) discord is always difficult. Add on to that extreme shyness, a feeling of inferiority, and some may think this girl was rejected. But God’s hand was on her and His heart was for her. Today, Ann Marie Turner has performed many great services in Jesus’ name for the love of God and man; and for herself! She has ministered in the male correctional for over ten years. Along with this website, Ann is the author of Joy Stories, Volume One and The Free Incarcerated Man. Writing about the joy of the Lord and the victory that is available for a willing soul is one of Ann’s now greatest joys! Ann’s prayer for you is to overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of your testimony. Celebrate the God of the Bible and your personal victories in Christ unceasingly! Revelation 12:11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
